Rick and Morty Season 5 Coming Sooner Than Expected

Rick and Morty Season 5 Coming Sooner Than Expected

Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block Adult Swim. The series follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and interdimensional adventures.

Rick and Morty are getting a fifth season, and it’s coming sooner than fans might be expecting. Even though Season 4 is still months off, creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon confirmed at Comic-Con today that work is well underway on Season 5. Harmon said, “It took us a year and a half to get in writing we were allowed to do the show. There was a lot of stuff that happened between 3 and 4 that will never have to happen again.”
Harmon later elaborated on the behind-the-scenes difficulties that caused such a large gap between Season 3 and 4, describing it as a prolonged contract negotiation made more complicated by corporate changes at WarnerMedia.

Harmon and Roiland gave fans some key plot details about the next season. They said that season 4 will have 10 episodes. Also, they’re apparently already working on a season five.

“We’re rolling right into the next batch. The plan has always been to get them out quicker,” Roiland said.

This is exciting for fans considering the gap between the third and fourth season is now at more than two and a half years.

They also talked about that gap and hinted at when we can expect the new seasons.

“I think it’s safe to say without fear of being wrong that the gap between seasons 3 and 4 will be the longest and last time that it’s ever so long that it’s ridiculous,” Harmon said. “I don’t know how fast we can do it, but I know it will never be this long again. There were so many things that had to be settled before we even started season 4, and it’s really safe to say — as Justin says — we’re literally writing season 5 while finishing season 4 just to force ourselves to commit to a certain schedule.”

“Not to get anyone’s hopes up, but it is structured into our deal that if we’re going strong and fast there are options to deliver more episodes at a time,” he continued. “Adult Swim can say, ‘These are on time and great. Do you want to do more instead of taking a break?’ And we can then do more. I’d like to see that day. Just knowing it’s possible makes me eager for it. I feel like a naughty boy when I’m late.”
